For most people, going to the dentist isn’t exactly their idea of a good time. However, many people struggle to even go to their family dentist because they experience mild to severe dental anxiety. If fear has kept you away from getting needed care for your teeth, here are some tips for managing your anxiety at your next appointment.
- Let us know — As your family dentist, we want to know if you have a hard time receiving dental treatment. Once we’re aware of your anxiety, we’ll be enabled to provide extra support and options catered to your needs. For instance, we may be able to use a numbing agent to minimize pain and discomfort.
- Wear headphones –– For many people, the smells and sounds of a dental office can be triggers for anxiety. If this is the same for you, we suggest wearing headphones to your appointment and listening to some of your favourite music as we work on your teeth.
- Arrive early –– Feeling rushed can heighten your anxiety levels and make it more difficult to get through your appointment. We recommend taking extra time to arrive early to your appointment.
- Bring a friend or family member –– Having a support system can go a long way when it comes to managing dental anxiety. As your family dentist, one thing we suggest is bringing a friend or family member to your appointment who can provide needed moral support.
