No one likes to show that they have missing teeth. When your smile is not at its best, it can take a huge toll on your self-confidence. You will laugh less, cover your smile with your hand, or even want to engage in less conversation. Fixing missing teeth and obtaining good oral health care can do amazing things for your self-esteem. One of the ways to fix missing teeth is for your mouth to be fixed with dental bridges.
True to its name, a dental bridge literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges are typically supported by natural teeth or implants. Made up of two crowns on either side of the gap, the missing tooth is replaced by a false tooth anchored in by the adjoining crowns. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, porcelain, alloys, or a combination of materials.
There are three main types of bridges:
- Cantilever bridges are used when only one of the adjacent teeth of the missing tooth is present.
- Resin-bonded bridges/ Maryland bridges are made of plastic and supported by metal framework with wings bonded to existing teeth.
- Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for teeth on either side of the missing tooth with a pontic in between. These are the most common type of bridges.
